BBC Comedy Classroom Competition

Congratulations and well done to Sarah Jayne McCallum in 10V who has won in the finals of the ‘Stand Up’ category in the BBC’s ‘Comedy Classroom Competition’. Launched in April, the competition was introduced to all our Year 9 pupils who were given the opportunity to attend a workshop and have a go at writing a comedy sketch. The nationwide competition was open to all pupils in Years 9 and 10 and there were three separate categories: Comedy Sketch, Stand-up and Photo Caption. Nationally, 16 students from last year’s Years 9 and 10 have been selected to go through to the final so Sarah Jayne has done tremendously well. Sarah Jayne has attended comedy writing workshops organised by the school and is a huge fan of stand-up comedians, her favourite being Lee Evans. She describes her style of comedy as observational as she enjoys watching people and finding the ‘funny’ in everyday life, as is evident from her routine about attending weddings and travelling on buses, which we hope she will perform some time in school. She is also a huge fan of TV sitcoms and names Red Dwarf, Birds of a Feather, Outnumbered and Big Band Theory among her favourite. She has been invited down to London where her work has been filmed and broadcast by the BBC. She has also receive a Comedy Classroom trophy, a signed certificate and a visit to their school from a BBC comedian.

Well done Sarah Jayne.
