Welcome to ABS Up FRIENDS OF ABS Newsletter Booking Form

July 2007

Dear Friend,

What a busy time it has been since I wrote to you last, both for the school and Friends of Archbishop Blanch School.  If you are a regular visitor to the school website, you will have seen that ABS now has a magnificent new Sixth Form Centre, much improved sports facilities, a new Drama Studio and a Music Rehearsal Room – all of which you can witness first hand when we hold our second joint School Reunion on 10th October 2008, a date specially chosen to coincide with Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture to give exiled Liverpudlians a double reason for “coming home”.

We have decided to repeat the successful formula of our first joint reunion held in 2002 by having an

Afternoon Tea and tour of the school (£2), followed in the evening by a meal with speakers from the three schools.    Demand is expected to be high and places limited for the evening meal, so if you wish to secure your place please complete the enclosed booking form with a £10 deposit per head for the meal (cheques should be made payable to Friends of Archbishop Blanch School). A further copy can be found on our website if you have friends who are not currently on our mailing list, but who you think would be interested in attending the Reunion. Barbara McPhail (nee Longsworth, Liverpool Girls College 1956-1963) organised a successful LGC ‘get together’ at the end of last year and we have recently welcomed her onto the FABS committee to help organise the joint reunion.  If anyone has memorabilia they would be prepared to lend from any of the three schools for the reunion, please do not hesitate to contact me.  I promise good care will be taken of any items you would be prepared to share.

Mrs Goodacre (ex-head of St Edmund’s) tells me that much interest was generated by the screening of the brilliant drama “Lilies”, based on the life of three Liverpool sisters, and written for TV by Heidi Thomas (St Edmund’s College, 1973 – 1980).  Heidi is currently working on Mrs Gaskell’s “Cranford” which promises to be equally entertaining.  If any of you are now famous or have excelled in your field of work please don’t be shy, we would welcome news of your success!  Mrs Goodacre would also like to report that £1,000 has been donated by ‘old girls’ of St Edmund’s to the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral to support the girl choristers – a very worthy cause and one which was much appreciated by the Choir.

FABS has continued to work tirelessly to raise money for the school and, in the past year alone, has funded £3,000 of furniture for the Sixth Form Centre and it’s outdoor recreational area, plus £1,500 for fitness equipment which will benefit all of the school community.  This has been achieved by various fundraising events including a Casino Night, Ladies Beauty Evening and a Fashion Show & Sale.  Due to popular demand, we will be holding another Fashion Show & Sale on 27th September and a Casino Night on 8th February 2008 (further details are on the website).

I am sure you will join with me in wishing Stephen Brierley success in his new post at The Deanery Church of England High School, Wigan.  Stephen has been our Headteacher for the past 4 years and achieved a great deal for ABS during his time here.  Finally, I do hope you enjoy reading the latest edition of the school magazine and look forward to receiving news of former staff and pupils.

Yours sincerely,

Jeanette Coppell

on behalf of Friends of Archbishop Blanch School
