Official opening ceremony
of the
Sixth Form & Sports Facilities
at
Archbishop
Blanch
School

19th
October 2006
Welcome to the
official opening ceremony of our new Sixth Form Centre and improved Sports
facilities. Our special guest today is Commonwealth Games Silver Medallist and
ex-ABS pupil, ANYIKA ONOURA. We are delighted that Anyika has found time in her
busy schedule to be with us.
In September 2001 a
Jubilee Appeal was launched, which ran until May 2004, with the hope of
raising enough funds to provide the school with sports facilities that can be
enjoyed by ourselves and a wide range of local residents.
The generosity of
generations of parents has enabled us to refurbish our Sports facilities and
a
£300,000+ project has resulted in the provision of:
§
All
Weather Multi-Purpose Use Floodlit Surface that can be used throughout the year
for a variety of sporting activities including hockey, tennis and football.
§
Activity area and Changing Rooms, including the provision of shower facilities
§
Classroom for Physical Education theory lessons
§
Computer suite and new office for the PE staff
§
A
Gymnasium used for Fitness and Dance.
We are actively
seeking sponsorship from companies to equip this facility and would welcome any
donations!
Following the long awaited demolition of
the redundant teaching block, we are now are delighted to have
a brand new two storey Sixth Form Centre, affording stunning views of the
Liverpool University precinct and the two Cathedrals.
With its computer
suite, study areas, careers room, self-catering bistro and well appointed
relaxation area, our Sixth Form facilities are now amongst the best in
the City. The wide range of opportunities on offer, both academic and
social, have this year attracted record numbers of students. As part of a sixth
form collaborative, Archbishop Blanch School is able to offer 30 subjects at AS
and A2 level, plus level 2 NVQ courses!
Our ‘old’ Sixth Form
Centre will now be converted into a new Drama Studio, and we have other plans
(and some money!) to be able to make a considerable difference to
other areas of the school too.
In the medium-term,
we are well-placed within the Building Schools for the Future programme to be
able to deliver a substantially improved (if not brand new) school building at
some point in the next 10 years, although we are still at the early stages of
planning for this project, and many decisions about our place in the programme
have still to be made. Whatever the outcome of that particular project, we
will continue to make the most of every opportunity we have to give our present
girls and Sixth Form boys the very best
facilities we
can.
Pupils only get one
chance; we are all committed to give them every opportunity to make the most of
that chance.
