Speaking out for Capital of Culture
Archbishop Blanch School Year 11 pupils, Rosalind Elsmore and Emma Slattery, carried away the trophy and a cash prize each on Monday evening in the Law Society’s Public Speaking Competition held at the Town Hall to celebrate Liverpool’s Year as Capital of Culture.
Schools throughout Merseyside entered teams consisting of two pupils to publicly debate on legal processes. The four finalist schools which included, Archbishop Blanch School, Merchant Taylors, St Margaret’s CE High School and Weatherhead High gave the judging panel some tough decisions to make deciding on the overall winners as the standard of entry was so high.
Jane Griffiths, Headteacher, said “I am so proud of the girls, who delivered outstanding presentations on their chosen subjects, ‘A cap on political donations at £1,500’ and ‘An amendment to the Human Tissue Rights on organ donation’. Indeed, many an adult would have been challenged to give such informed and interesting talks. The amount of effort the girls had put into researching the topics and the support given by their teacher Ms Kate Graham was very evident”.
The girls said that they were very nervous at first, but thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were thrilled to have won such a prestigious event.
